Message of Solidarity from the Asian Students Associationon the event of the International Youth and Students Mission
June 23-27, 2007
Warmest solidarity greetings to the organizers and participants of the International Youth and Students Mission!
It gives us great pleasure and inspiration that many of our fellow youth leaders abroad are taking the challenge and the lead in the ongoing global campaign to uphold human rights and stop the killings in the Philippines.
This mission is very important and its results should be told to the world. The world should know that until now the Philippine government has not come any closer to resolving the cases of extrajudicial killings.
The guilt verdict released by the Permanent Peopleâ€s Tribunal on the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo government is more than enough reason why the government never did come any closer.
Aside from the report of the Melo Commission implicating the military for most of the killings, Mrs. Arroyo and her administration are receiving flak from the governments like the European Union for an unsatisfactory effort to resolve the cases.
We have also heard young people from all over the world speaking up courageously and demanding their own governments to condemn these killings. Norway, the United States, Canada, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand and Australia are but a few of the many countries where international solidarity among the young people for the Philippines is alive and strong.
By speaking up for them, we give voice to those who have been silenced. By standing up for them, we give life back to their dreams and aspirations. With this, we know that their lives and what they gave their lives for shall not be in vain.
We will strongly support whatever resolution, action or initiative that shall come out of this mission. It is important for us to build among ourselves a network that shall not only safeguard but speak hard and strongly on the issue of human rights and its protection.
It is important for us to continue working together in empowering and organizing more young people in the grassroots level to confront and combat any form of violation that shall come their way.
By this, we strengthen our movements as we strengthen our solidarity with one another.
Long live the International Youth and Students Mission!
Uphold and defend human rights!
Stop the killings in the Philippines!
Long live international solidarity!
