“It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.”
(By harassing and shooting priests and pastors
who minister to the poor and downtrodden.)

“It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.”
(By muzzling reporters who speak truth to power.)

“It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.”
(By jailing and torturing poets whose verses
condemn the miseries of their people.)

“It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.”
(By pumping bullets into the bodies
of campus organizers walking home
or riding the bus on the way to school.)

“It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.”
(By silencing lawyers who fight
for even their right to a fair trial.)

“It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.”
(By seizing ballot boxes
and voting in behalf of the voters.)

“It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.”
(By shooting protesters and later claiming
that the protesters shot each other.)
