Youth in Los Baños, Laguna today used art to call for the young Filipinos to “cast a vote for the environment” in the May elections.
UP Los Baños Student Council officers and Kabataan Party-Los Baños chapter painted the walls of the Los Baños Central Elementary School in Brgy. Timugan to emphasize that the problem of environmental destruction should be one of the key election issues this year.
“We support the call of environmentalist groups to cast a vote for the environment. The youth would inherit the earth and thus, protecting our environment means protecting our future,†said PJ Santos, local project coordinator of Kabataan Party.
He said the Los Baños youth “felt the urgency and immensity of the need to help protect the environment after experiencing the horrors Typhoon Milenyo brought to the town.”
Los Baños was among those worst hit by the Typhoon Milenyo last year. At least six were killed in Brgy. Bagong Silang, a community in Mt. Makiling.
USC-UPLB councilor Christine Macabetcha said environmental degradation does not seem to be a major issue for many candidates this year. “We want to make a statement that this is an issue the youth are concerned about,†she said.
Before the wall-painting activity, the youth held a forum in UPLB where the situation of the environment was discussed. –Tinig.com
