Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is a grade school and high school alumna of Assumption College, Makati. Here is a statement from the Assumption College of Davao.
“Citizens are not obligated in conscience to follow the prescriptions of civil authorities if their precepts are contrary to the demands of the moral order, to the fundamental rights of persons or to the teachings of the Gospel” (#399 of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church)
What is happening today in our society only points to one thing: that the State has lost its moral ascendancy and is fast degenerating in the face of this recent NBN-ZTE deal exposé that unmask its true face, which is tyrannical against the people it has mandate to serve.
From among its ranks in civil service, the diminutive Mr. Rodolfo Lozada came out with his truth to expose what have been ‘standard operating procedures’ of government leaders in high places, “milking” millions from shady deals on projects that did not even directly benefit the people.
In the face of these, the silent uproar and vehemence is now slowly building up among our people, some of whom have become cynical about these graft and corrupt practices of government.
We, the Assumption College of Davao community, in solidarity with the rest in society who have the responsibility to educate and instill Christian values and nationalism among our children, are outraged by the incredulity of these actions among government leaders.
We are beginning to ask ourselves:
* WHAT DOES A CHILD LEARN TODAY AS SHE/HE IS BOMBARDED WITH THE REAL DRAMA EACH DAY, TELLING HER/HIM ABOUT THE MISCONDUCT OF NATIONAL LEADERS?
* WHAT KIND OF ROLE MODELS DO THEY HAVE TODAY?
* CAN WE EXPECT BETTER LEADERS FOR TOMORROW IF WHAT THEY SEE AND HEAR IN THEIR MIDST ARE LEADERS WHO ARE OUTRIGHT LIARS, CHEATS, GREEDY AND DISRESPECTFUL OF THEIR BASIC RIGHTS?
We cannot teach our children what HONESTY is all about without having to be confronted with the DISHONESTY of our national leaders.
We, in the educational institution have been preaching HONESTY, TRUTH and LOVE OF COUNTRY among our children amid the willful display of wholesale disavowal among government leaders of their nationality.
With all these alarming revelations poured out into the open at the Senate by Mr. Lozada, we could not help but decry ENOUGH is ENOUGH! It is good that we have this person who has the courage to speak the TRUTH.
We cannot play deaf and dumb over this situation! We are holding the leaders of the Philippine Government responsible for all these malevolence of people in government displayed with wanton disregard of the intelligence and basic human rights of the Filipino people! We can no longer keep our silence because silence would mean timidity and fear, and in effect this would be teaching our children to accept what the powerful wants us to do, and that is not to voice out our views and to stifle our own voice so they can freely trample on our dignity as a people!
We commend the courageous Mr. Rodolfo Noel Lozada, Jr. who risks his life for the TRUTH.
We appeal strongly to CHED Chair Romulo Neri, to also speak the TRUTH.
We call on every Filipino to join the clamor for redress from erring government officials!
We call on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to inhibit herself, if not to STEP DOWN from power as the investigation is on-going to give the Senate a free hand to fully unmask the culprit and bring to justice whoever is involved!
We demand to be fully accounted for everything that is transpiring in our society! It is our basic rights as a Sovereign people to seek redress from PUBLIC SERVANTS!
In the name of PEACE and JUSTICE, we call on every Filipino to RECLAIM our basic right to the TRUTH, to exercise our supreme power over the servants who have become the masters of those they have vowed to serve!
Let us continue to be vigilant and protect our birthright to know the TRUTH and uphold it!
“Men and women have the specific duty to move always towards the truth, to respect it and bear responsible witness to it” (#198 of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church)
“Then you will know the truth and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32).
