An Open Letter to the Filipino Youth

Warmest greetings!

It is my fervent hope that you would lend me a little time by reading this letter. The pressing concerns of our times compelled me to write to you. You see, we are doomed to inherit a bankrupt society. I know this concerns you as much as it concerns me.

Our times manifest that something must be done if we are to steer our fate away from the road to perdition. We all know that we have a next-to-nothing government manned mostly by the known corrupt and greedy species of politicians. Our country is governed by plunderers and hoodlums in uniform. We have a government that serves the capricious whims of a foreign power that is no other than the imperialist United States. We have a bankrupt “export-oriented and import-dependent economy” designed by US imperialism to suit its interests. We have the Armed Forces of the Philippines led by generals who have the propensity of enriching themselves whether by hook or by crook. Yes, AFP and police generals who are also in cahoots with kidnappers, murderers, bank robbers and other criminal syndicates. We have policemen who cannot even police their own ranks. We have justices who can only render justice to the wealthy and the powerful. We have laws that can only punish the poor and exonerate the rich. We have a so-called democracy where press freedom is honored more in breach than respect. We are in a system designed to fail. And to sum it all, we are in a deep shit!

You see, our nation is almost a hopeless case. This is the very reason why this nation is already experiencing a rapid brain drain. The continuing exodus of the best in almost all professions is not only alarming but appalling! Our loved ones are fast becoming primary export products of our country by sending them abroad as domestic helpers and workers in dangerous places like Iraq. We are strangled by the ever rising prices of basic commodities. We are faced yearly by the rising tuition fees and other school fees. The peso is heading for the underworld. Crimes here, there and everywhere. Now, who would say this is just about fiscal crisis?

I know that no sane individual among us would ever want to inherit the bankrupt status quo of this country. For who among us would want to have plunderers as leaders of this country? Who among us would want to have leaders who serve the dictates and interests of a foreign power? Who among us would like to suffer more under the tyranny of the ruling elite? Who among us would still prefer to live under the present oppressive system when we can build our own? Who among us would not rage with the fact that we are doomed to inherit a bankrupt society?

Ours is almost a hopeless case but hopelessness can never be an option for us if we want change. WE ARE THE HOPE OF THIS NATION! If we want to steer this country away from the road to perdition, we have no other option but to fight for a genuine national freedom and democracy. Let us not delude ourselves that we are a free nation. For as long as our government is a rubberstamp of the imperialist United States’ policies, we can never chart our own destiny. For as long as we have an economy designed by US imperialism for its interests, this country is bound for the underworld. For as long as we have so-called leaders who are servile servants of US imperialism, there can never be completeness to our nationhood. A nation can only be sovereign when it is free!

The Filipino youth had long been initiated in the revolutionary tradition of fighting for genuine freedom and democracy. Let us be inspired by our forebears like Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto who led the fight against foreign domination. Let us do our share in our collective duty to serve the people. Let us revive within us the spirit of the revolutionary tradition of the Filipino youth!

Long live the struggle for genuine national freedom and democracy!

Onward with the armed struggle for genuine national freedom and democracy!
