BALITA AT LATHALAIN
WTO July Package fails the poor
By Edwin Licaros
The World Trade Organizations (WTO) General Council reached an
agreement on July 31 in Geneva on a number of controversial trade issues.
The corporate media were quick to hail the July Package of Framework
Agreements as a breakthrough for the World Trade Organization's
Doha Round of negotiations that had been stalled after the failed ministerial
meeting in Cancun, Mexico last year.
Encounters with Tony Zumel
By Bobby Tuazon
Antonio
Zumel epitomizes the writer who chose to bring journalism to the people,
nay, who chose to write for the people. But he also believed that
sometimes one has to turn the pen into a sword in order to fight tyranny
and class rule.
The World is His Home
By Alexander Martin Remollino
The
book's title, Jose Maria Sison: At Home in the World - Portrait of
a Revolutionary, is apt. This is the chronicle of a man who was banished
from the country of his birth and branded a "terrorist"
because he refused to accept its condition as a land enslaved; but
who never lifted his feet from his native land even as he is bound
to the refugee's life abroad, and refuses to be cowed by those who
seek to terrorize him by calling him a "terrorist."
LIHAM AT PAHAYAG
US has no sovereign right
to interfere in Philippine affairs
By Prof. Jose Ma. Sison
Contrary to what officials of the Macapagal-Arroyo regime
say, the US has no sovereign right to intervene in Philippine
affairs and put the negotiating panel and consultants of
the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP)
under duress in peace negotiations.
No to 'Embedded Troops'!
By the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP)
slammed yesterday plans by the Armed Forces of the Philippines
to embed troops among media organizations, calling this
"a heavy-handed attempt at news management and the
latest sign of the constriction of democratic space in the
country."
Banning Cellphones in Schools
is Wrong
By Raymond Palatino
The role of cellphones in enhancing human productivity is
very much recognized today. By banning them in schools,
DepEd is restricting teachers and school administrators
to teach students the right way of using this technology.

Open Letter to John Howard
"Mr. Howard, you accuse the Filipino people of weakness for the
way they responded to the hostage crisis. May we take the liberty to
tell you that it is those who see no course for themselves other than
to unflinchingly hug the tails of imperial mass murderers who are the
real weaklings. It is they who, above all, risk the lives of their countrymen
for a war that is not worth the life of even a louse, much less that
of an innocent human being," according to the Filipino Youth
for Peace.
Journalism as Agent of Change: the Philippine
Experience
Alexander Martin Remollino states, "The press is
not called the Fourth Estate for nothing. It is called the Fourth Estate
because its great influence on public opinion can make it a potent force
for social change."
Writing About Today's Heroes
Jude Cartalaba writes, "The true miracle is in our hands regardless
of what status you are in right now, what gender or preference you have,
whatever makes anyone distinct, but still can make diamonds out of coals."

MAIKLING KUWENTO
Val Hall A
Ni Dennis Aguinaldo
"They recall or foretell the God of the Place as the God of Knowledge.
In one of Its myths, It sold an eye for the purpose of knowing. In another,
It hung dead on wood for three days for that very same acquisition.
In yet another, It just knows; It has known and will eternally know
everything. In one dusty corner of this infinite apprehension, It created
the Hall."
Purgatorio
Ni Piya Constantino
"Pasensya na po. Maawa na po kayo sa asawa ko. May pito kaming anak,
wala kaming pera. Naghahanap pa po kami ng mauutangan
Para
siyang manikang de susi, paulit-ulit tuwing kailangang makipagtawaran
sa doktor."
Pamela: PUV-Pokpok ng Almar-Zabarte
Ni Vlad Gonzales
"May mga bagay siyang hindi alam. Maraming bagay. Minsa'y

Filipino Youth for Peace.

GMA is a Friend of the Rich
"President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was right when she boasted in her
State of the Nation Address (SONA) that she is a friend of the people.
But she could be referring to the people who donated to her campaign
kitty and not the Filipino everyman."
TOMONG TOMA
Dennis Sarmiento Aguinaldo
Winter and the Naked Nation
"Rizal did not live to see the St Louis World's Fair Exposition
in 1904. The brutal Filipino-American War ended and the US government
systematically implemented the 'benevolent assimilation program' as
directed by the unholy vision of McKinley. The government needed grand
displays of the mighty imperial project to justify its rise as a colonial
power to its people and the world. They thus, exhibited the 'savage'
life-ways of the Filipinos to foster the sense need for white, 'humanitarian'
intervention."

line."

The Afternoon Bus Ride
"I have been living here in Winnipeg for about eight months now, and
I am proud to say that I have been to different places by riding a bus,
and not by driving a car. Of course, that does not mean that I do not
know how to drive; or like my mother, am too scared to drive. In fact,
the reason why I take the bus to work is simply because my family does
not own a car yet."
