The Growing
Number of Radio Talk Shows
by Ronald Noel V. Reyes
YOU"VE
probably heard more talk on FM radio lately. Some may think of
it as the downfall of local FM radio. Others may believe that
talk shows should only be found on the AM band. But it had somehow
proven that radio talk shows help people a lot.
It began slowly
with a couple of radio stations going on air with programs discussing
current issues. Then slowly it allowed its listeners to call in
and be heard. No one really knows where it all began. Even asking
which station started it all maybe useless.
Radio talk
shows seem to have gathered different audiences. Examples of which
come from 103.5 K-Lite, a relatively new station in the FM band,
Not only does it play good music, its also airs worthwhile talk
shows. With programs like Talk Back, Nitelite, Sports Lite, Twisted
and Girl Talk, K-lite proved how talk shows could gather people.
This is especially
true in the case of Nitelite, which basically is a talk show where
listeners can call in and discuss with the deejays anything they
want to talk about. It has become a means for people who have
personal problems to speak their minds. The deejays offer advice
regarding their problem. Also included in the program are TV themes
and a question and answer portion. The three main hosts of the
show, Blade, Monica and Li'l David have become popular that they
had been invited to guest in several TV talk shows.
Amazingly
enough, most people would say radio talk shows cannot live very
long. They were proven wrong, and as most of us can see, Nitelite
is now more than five years old.
Talk Back,
on the other hand, is an issue-based kind of talk show where deejays
post a question to which listeners can react to. It airs 7 to
7:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Listeners await the next topic and
give out intelligent answers. It just proves that people are much
smarter than we think.
Besides K-lite,
other stations also carry talk shows. There are several talk shows
on RX93.1, 93.9 KCFM and NU107, all of which have gathered a good
number of listeners.
This proves
that FM radio is not only for music. FM stations can be intelligent
and can add knowledge its listeners. The question of how far these
radio talk shows will last is quite difficult to answer. A lot
of listeners appreciate them, and this would probably make them
stay longer than what most critics would want to project.
