On Media Freedom and Responsibility
i would just like to comment on the arrests of the cagayan de oro journalists. i come from that place, and i have listened to radio commentaries ever since i was young. i say some broadcast journalists there are irresponsible, if things hadn't changed in the year that i
was gone (i am studying away from home). they exaggerate their opinions; they sometimes divert from the facts. i mean, one can expose the wrongdoings of an official, but in the right way. often, the official's personal life was touched, even those beyond public concern. private lives are shred menacingly. they talk of getting all sides of the story, but often, when they get an issue, they start opening their mouths.

there was also this one time before when two radio stations dxIF and dxCo (i think i must mention) were fighting on air. it took days, or maybe even weeks, i can't remember anymore. i must say that the words uttered were bad, really bad. and i was just in high school then. the two have long been rivals, but i am not sure if they are friends now.

now, was that being responsible?

the media is supposed to help solve society's problems, not to sensationalize and not to compete, and if ever they should, should do so off-air.

i must say that i don't look up to journalists in cagayan de oro, radio journalists at least.

i don't say though, that journalists should protect the city leaders. what i only want to say is for them to be more responsible. do not exaggerate. do not sensationalize. do not swear on-air.

i am now a journalism student and i so want a free press, but i also believe that with great power comes great responsibility.

i hope this feedback could reach them.

thank you and more power.

Hehehe. Joke lang. Salamat sa pagsulat. --Ederic
