THE PARTY-LIST group Bayan Muna has strongly decried the Macapagal-Arroyo
administration "for capitalizing on the spoils of an illegal
and unjust war."
This, after Foreign Affairs secretary Blas Ople issued a directive
to the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Trade and
Industry to come up with a plan to help Filipino construction firms
and manpower providers bag lucrative contracts to help rebuild a post-war
Iraq.
"While it is understandable that the country is in dire need
of gainful employment especially during these economically troubled
times, it is shameful that as the brutal war rages on the Foreign
secretary seizes the moment to capitalize on the consequences of an
immoral and unjust war," said Bayan Muna Representative Satur
Ocampo.
"It is regrettable that secretary Ople is setting an example
for Filipinos to indulge in opportunism, which corresponds to the
inhumanity of the war being waged by the US," Ocampo said.
The activist solon further claimed: "Just as the US government
has pre-conceived the immense economic and political returns after
taking over Iraq, the Macapagal-Arroyo administration shamelessly
envisions sharing in such war profit."
Ocampo added: "The US has no moral authority to rally the UN
to provide so-called humanitarian assistance to Iraq after it has
launched a war of aggression in that country.
