THIS COMING January 22-26, 2003 Manila will host the 4th World Meeting
of Families. The call is to build up missionaries in and for Asia,
giving importance to family life.
We at SoUL would like to support this endeavor but for as long as
we are abrasively labeled as unnatural beings, we find it rather difficult.
For centuries the moral issue against us is our sexuality that has
been adjudged to "defeat" the so-called procreation purpose.
In this third millennium, shall we continuously suffer and taught
to be ashamed of ourselves?
Look at our community again, we ask.
Because of the stigma of being "that unnatural" some of
us are victims of domestic violence. Numerous testimonies have been
shared about the physical and verbal abuses many of us had experienced
simply because we decided to come out to our families.
Should there be a theology that would liberate all of us from this
prejudice, we will gladly support.
In this light we salute those loving parents who have accepted their
homosexual children in their families. We thank them for the courage
and unconditional love and support ·values reflective of a
true Christian in these times.
Kudos to same-sex couples and their children who, in their everyday
struggles for social acceptance, have managed to stay united as a
family. We also hold in high regard our Catholic neighbors and friends
who, despite patriarchal teachings of the Church against our existence,
have treated us with respect.
