LIHAM AT PAHAYAG
Stop Shady Deals with Estrada, Get Serious with Anti-Corruption Crusade

PRESIDENT ARROYO should not mistake as "healing" the past and future compromises with ousted leader Joseph Estrada especially after she announced her disinterest for the 2004 elections.

As such, she should disregard Senator Panfilo Lacson's suggestions that she let go of Estrada and allow house arrest to be granted him. Justice should be served.

Electioneering is just one of the many issues ranged against Mrs. Arroyo. Her betrayal of the People Power 2's crusade against corruption is another.

If she is really serious, Mrs. Arroyo should be more decisive in ensuring a quick, fair and open trial for Estrada as well as other corrupt government officials as in the PEA and IMPSA scandals, including those among her partymates. The sincerity of her statement will be measured by how she henceforth treats these issues.

Pessimism and disenchantment will grow if Mrs. Arroyo's statement remains a mere promise from a traditional politician who allows and benefits from bureaucratic corruption.
