Bayan, US OUT
NOW Hit Talon Vision War Games
AT A picket
in front of the US Embassy in Manila, the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan
expressed outrage over the bombing that hit Bali, Indonesia and
expressed condolences to the families of the nearly 200 killed in
the incident, as it warned the US against “misdirecting public
anger and grief into a raison d’etre for further expanding
the so-called war against terror”.
“We extend
solidarity to the people of Indonesia at this time of mourning.
We join them in condemning and calling for an end to terrorism in
all its forms, including US-led imperialist wars made in the name
of victims in New York and Bali,” said Bayan Secretary-General
Teodoro A. Casiño.
“The Indonesian
people should not be rushed into plunging into the US-led war and
thereby mimic how the US and Philippine governments made the country
a giant US base through military exercises, poisoned the atmosphere
for peace negotiations and declared revolutionaries as terrorists
all in the name of anti-terrorism,” added Casiño.
The picket also
coincides with the National Security Council meeting on the US-led
war on Iraq and the New People’s Army.
No
to Talon Vision, anti-terror laws
Casiño said Indonesians should prevent the US from staging
war games similar to Talon Vision which starts today in Central
Luzon, and the enactment of anti-terrrorism legislation that would
curtail civil liberties and human rights.
“Talon
Vision may be a cover, a smokescreen for possible transit of US
troops from Japan to combat areas in the Middle East. Nothing is
written banning the US troops from secretly making the Philippines
a launching pad for a war against the Iraq,” said Casiño.
“We urge
the public, Congress and the Senate to look into the legal basis
for Talon Vision, as well as safeguards from abuse and misuse by
the US troops. As far as we know, there remains a constitutional
ban on foreign military presence except under a treaty duly concurrred
in by the Senate. There are also no official announcement whatsoever
on any a Terms of Reference for Talon Vision,” he added.
