The Ramon Magsaysay Awards 2002

Making Asia a Better Place

THE RAMON Magsaysay Award, distinguished as the Nobel Prize of Asia, honors individuals in Asia whose life and work are characterized by selfless service which impacts the lives of the greater many—the same ideals and achievements for which President Ramon Magsaysay is dearly remembered.

On August 31, 2002 (Saturday) at 5 p.m., six exemplary individuals from Burma, India, Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Philippines will be formally conferred during the Presentation Ceremonies to be held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The public is most welcome.

Join us in celebrating the 2002 Ramon Magsaysay Awards.

Hilario Davide Jr. (Philippines)
Chief Justice of the Philippines’ Supreme Court, for Government Service

“His life of principled citizenship in profound service to democracy and the rule of law in the Philippines”

Dr. Ruth Pfau (Pakistan)
Catholic nun in Pakistan, who for many years led the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre (MALC), for Public Service

“Her lifelong dedication to eradicating leprosy and its stigma in Pakistan, and other loving gifts to her adopted country”

Dr. Cynthia Maung (Burma)
Founder and Head of the Mae Tao Clinic in the border town of Mae Sot, Thailand, for Community Leadership

“Her humane and fearless response to the urgent medical needs of thousands of refugees and displaced persons along the Thailand-Burma border”

Bharat Koirala (Nepal)
Founder and lifetime mentor of the Nepal Press Institute, for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communications Arts

“Developing professional journalism in Nepal and unleashing the democratizing powers of a free media”

Sukho Choi/ Venerable Pomnyun Snim (Korea)
Korean Buddhist monk, for Peace and International Understanding

“His compassionate attention to the human costs of Korea’s bitter division and his hopeful appeal for reconciliation”

Sandeep Pandey (India)
Of Asha for Education, India for Emergent Leadership

“The empowering example of his commitment to the transformation of India’s marginalized poor”
