Florentino's Bio:
T'WAS NINOY
Aquino's assassination catapulted me from half-a-world away and
landed me in Manhattan in '83. By then I'd lived a half-century
with a whole lifetime behind me.
In Manila from
'48 -'53 I'd written & published 6 books of plays, led by The
World Is an Apple & The Portable Florentino; published 70+ books
by Filipino writers in Tagalog, Spanish & English, led by 5
"National Treasures": Rizal, Balagtas, Recto, Bulosan,
(Paz M.) Benitez; 6 more who'd be "National Artists":
Villa, Joaquin, Arcellana, Gonzalez, (Edith) Tiempo & Abueva;
& 15 more whose first books carried my name / my "peso
book" imprint.
I'd written
for 10 TV drama anthologies, led by the original Balintataw; scripted
4 movies; reviewed films / plays / books; written columns; traveled
widely; taught / lectured at universities in Manila & in the
US.; attended conferences, participated in symposia.
Not bad for
a college dropout & alumnus of SHK: School of Hard Knocks, my
school without walls or known addresss, where the earth becomes
my home, the world my stage, where at 70 there's no end to or graduation
from a lifetime of learning.
