YUPEACE
YuPeace Lambasts Bush,
Launches 1 M Signature Campaign

01 February 2002

YuPeace, an alliance of about 30 youth organizations formed after the September 11 attacks, today slammed the State of the Union Address of US President George W. Bush delivered last Wednesday due to its “contents disrespectful to our national sovereignty and to our country itself”.

Ryan Silverio, spokesperson of the group, said, “Frustrated with the still failed capture of Osama Bin Laden of his over-hyped war against terrorism, Bush is looking for a trophy here in the Philippines.”

“He is very optimistic that they can pound the Abu Sayyaf and collar Janjalani thinking that this could cloak their blunder in tracking where Bin Laden is now staying.”

The alliance is also planning to launch their 1 Million Signatures against the Balikatan Exercises Campaign before the end of this week to further register the youth’s rejection of the deployment of US troops in the Philippines.

Silverio further said:“If there is any sector that is very much worried with all that is happening now, it is the youth sector. With all its idealism, it is the initiator and at the forefront of the struggle for the ejection of the US Bases.”

“We are also very alarmed that this so-called Balikatan military exercises could result to more human rights violations as with the US military is identified with. Besides, if this is really just a training exercises, why do it in a combat zone like Basilan?”

YuPeace also joined the Peace Camp sponsored anti-Balikatan rally this afternoon at the US Embassy. They also vowed to launch a series of youth mass actions “until the government ejects the American troops”.

Aside from Silverio’s Amnesty International- Human Rights Youth Action Network (AI-HRYAN), YuPeace members include Sanlakas Youth, Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Manggagawang Pilipino (KAMPI), Liga ng Sosyalistang Kabataan (LSK), Youth for Nationalism and Democracy (YND), Teatrong Bayan, Pluma Lex Majores, Ang Pamantasan Student Publication, Integrated Muslim Students Associations of the Philippines (IMUSTAPHIL), Society for Homosexual Emergence (SHE), Guerilla Art Movement (GAM), Unyon ng Progresibong Mag-aaral (UPM), Sandigan Party Alliance (SPA), Mag-aaral Kaisa ng Sambayanan (MAGKAISA), Bukluran Student Alliance (BSA) and other youth organizations, student councils, SKs and student publications.
