an interruption
By James Nicolay
a step away
from the middle of the road
i turned my gaze - my neck twisting -
and pondered on the black pool
of shadow following me; a miniature
of demonlike bleak silk
attached at my feet.
it stared at me with scorn
though i can hardly picture its eyes
mocking my bland soul
dimmer than its impure nature,
that abominable dog...
i jumped, hopped, danced like a fool
just to unattach the beast,
but it returns. the beast returns.
i cried as
the shadow creeps into me
i felt its chill, bite, harassing my limbs
squeezing every vein, every nerve
contracting bloodflow. i froze
and gave in. i chose
to be defeated, bashed,
i was overpowered completely...
and suddenly, i felt warmth, breath
harnessing my goosebumps,
my humongous, mounting bulge,
slowly my spirit imploded...
a fly bit me, awakened me,
as if leading me back to my quest
ahead - another lightless tunnel.
