You say he is as likely to steal
as a sheep is likely to kill,
because he has all the wealth in the world.
I take it no one ever informed you
that “greed and hunger are not the same”?
The greatest thieves, in case you haven’t heard,
have often been the richest men.
(Ever read of the robber barons?)
Rapacity is not [...]

A hundred Februaries and more
after Grayson fired those fatal shots,
the blood shed by Anastacio Felix
on the pavement at Sosiego and Silencio
refuses to dry.
Liwanag is bound still to the balete,
with gold chains,
as the bald eagle hovers on over the land
with our tattered flag
hanging from its beak.

History for you
was never a mere calendar of events.
Your pen was a million megaphones,
loudspeaker upon loudspeaker,
for the chorus of voices
silenced by official histories.
And now,
the last page of your life is writ.
But your annals
are etched in stone in the people’s history.
And so you will never be history.
In memoriam: Howard Zinn, people’s historian, 1922-2010

hindi niya sinabing ito’y isang pakikidigma. Hindi nagbabala
ang sugatang dibdib ng bundok
na hihinga ito, patatalsiki’t pagugulungin
ang nakayakap niyang mga bato
sa ilog, lupa, batis at mga lawa
Walang kinalaman
kung idinuduyan man ng hangin
pakaliwa o pakanan,
ang naglambiting mga hamog sa dahon–
wala silang pulitikal na opinyon
Hindi rin [...]

palasong tumarak saking utak
binigyang saysay
mga kamay
na nagbibitak
sa kalyo
taglay mo ang naninigid
na init ng disyerto
hampas ng hanging habagat
halimuyak
ng mamasa masang ulop ng Sierra Madre
ikaw ngayo’y aking tangan
sa bawat paghakbang sa mapuputik na landas
isinisigaw nang iyong laway
ang apoy sa Bukang-Liwayway
ipinipinta natin ang kinabukasan
karamay ang sumamot panaghoy
ng mga nalalagi sa ibaba at sulok
habang gamit ang iyong talim
sasaksakin natin
ang [...]
